We have found that one of our favorite ways to be introduced to a new city is by roaming its streets on a bike. There's no better way to see a large unknown area in a short amount of time, than to follow someone who knows the way.
We've done several bike tours around the world. We love the quick crash corse in history, architecture, culture and politics that you get while rolling along on popular avenues, alleys and parks. Stopping along the way at places you would have normally walked on by. While in Bogota we used Bogota Bike Tours. It's store front is centrally located in the La Candelabra area which is where you are definitely going to while in Bogota. While Bogota isn't anywhere near the top of my list for top travel destinations and you will never hear me say "You have got to see Bogota! It's amazing!" Bogota is raw and gritty and not necessarily beautiful, but if you look closely, you can marvel at it's sheer magnitude and the transformation it's undergoing into a cosmopolitan city. It's still worth a quick stop if you're in the neighborhood.
You're going to see and learn much more in this tour than what you'll read in your Lonely Planet book.
You will be given an interesting history lesson while standing in the middle of Bolivar Plaza. You'll stop in at a small independently owned coffee factory and possibly have a shot of Colombia's favorite fire water (Aguardiente) added to you coffee, as I did. Learn about the culture and importance of graffiti in Columbia. Get an eye opening introduction to the vast amount of (and for us, never heard of before) fruits that are available here. And then my husbands all time favorite, a chance to play Colombia's most explosive national pastime, Tejo. Who wouldn't love throwing heavy rocks at gun powder packets while drinking beer. Bogota also has a really informative free walking tour that we also did while we were here that I highly recommend through Beyond Colombia. We did this tour and learned even more than what was offered on the biking tour. You can't loose on either tour!
